Independent accountancy practice

Accounts that stay tidy, answers you can actually use.

Maple Vessel looks after the bookkeeping, filings and planning for small businesses that would rather spend their evenings somewhere other than a spreadsheet. One named accountant, a steady monthly rhythm, and no jargon in the replies.

What we do

Six things we take off your desk

Most clients start with one of these and grow into the rest. You are welcome to pick only the piece you need help with right now.

Year-end accounts & filings

We prepare the statutory accounts, reconcile the year, and submit everything that needs submitting — with a short summary of what the numbers are telling you.

Bookkeeping & reconciliation

Receipts categorised, bank feeds matched, and supplier balances kept current, so the year-end is a review rather than an excavation.

Tax planning

A look ahead rather than a look back: allowances, timing of purchases, and how you draw money from the business, reviewed before decisions are locked in.

Payroll

Pay runs prepared on schedule, payslips issued, joiners and leavers processed, and the year-end payroll paperwork closed off without you chasing it.

Management reporting

A short monthly or quarterly pack: what came in, what went out, where margin moved, and the one or two lines worth watching next period.

New business setup

Choosing a structure, registering it properly, and getting records started in a way that will still make sense in three years. Useful if you are about to trade.

How it works

What a year with us actually looks like

No mystery and no long silences. This is the shape of the working relationship from the first conversation onwards.

  1. A first conversation

Twenty minutes on what your business does, how records are kept today, and what is currently causing the most friction.

  2. Records review and scope

We look at what exists, tell you plainly what needs tidying, and write down exactly which work we will handle and when.

  3. The monthly rhythm

Bookkeeping and payroll run on a fixed schedule. You send records one way, you get a short readable summary back.

  4. Year-end and the year ahead

Accounts prepared and filed, then a planning conversation about the next twelve months while there is still time to act on it.

Every engagement is written down before it starts: the work included, the schedule it runs on, and who to contact.
Who we help

Small businesses that want one steady pair of hands

We keep the practice deliberately small, which means we are a good fit for some businesses and an honest mismatch for others. If you are outside these, say so in your enquiry and we will tell you straight.

  • Independent trades

Builders, electricians and fitters juggling materials, subcontractors and van receipts.

  • Creative studios

Designers and small agencies with project billing, retainers and a few freelancers on the books.

  • Clinics and practices

Small health and therapy practices balancing appointment income with room and equipment costs.

  • Online sellers

Ecommerce and subscription businesses with platform fees, stock and multiple payout streams to reconcile.

Most of our work happens remotely, with a call whenever a decision needs a proper discussion.
Questions, answered

The things people ask before getting in touch

If your question is not here, put it in the enquiry form. A direct answer costs us nothing and saves you a call.

Can I switch accountants partway through a year?
Yes, and it is more common than people expect. We request the records and history from your previous accountant, reconcile the position to date, and pick the work up from there. You are not obliged to wait for a year-end.
What state do my records need to be in?
Whatever state they are in now is fine to start from. If bookkeeping software is already in use we work inside it; if the records are folders and bank statements, we will tell you what we can use and what needs rebuilding before we begin.
Will you keep track of my deadlines?
That is part of the engagement. Filing dates are scheduled at the start of the relationship and we ask for the information we need well ahead of each one, rather than in the final week.
How are fees worked out?
On the scope of work, not on hours ticking away. After the records review we quote a fixed monthly or annual figure for the agreed work, and we tell you before doing anything that falls outside it.
Do we need to meet in person?
Not usually. Records move securely, and most conversations happen by call or email. When a decision genuinely benefits from sitting down together, we will arrange it.
Start an enquiry

Tell us where the business is right now

A few lines is enough. We read every enquiry ourselves and reply with either a straight answer or a suggested first conversation.

Good to include
What the business does, roughly how long it has been trading, and which piece of the accounting is causing trouble.
What happens next
You get a written reply outlining what we would handle, followed by a short call if it looks like a fit.
No obligation
The first conversation and the records review are there for you to decide with. Nothing is committed until the scope is agreed in writing.

We use what you send only to answer your enquiry.
